This Porsche Panamera came to us with a custom $7,500 green paint job. When you've invested that kind of money into a color that doesn't exist on any factory option sheet, you don't cut corners on protection.
The owner wanted the paint protected for as long as he owns the car, so we coated it in Icon Rocklear. It bonds permanently to the paint, cures thicker than the factory clear coat, and carries a 15 year manufacturer guarantee, no waxing, no reapplying, no peeling off and starting over.
Here is the difference that matters most. Factory clear coat is not chemically resistant. Park a dark colored car on a 100 degree summer day and bird droppings can eat through the clear coat in less than 24 hours, causing permanent damage. Once the droppings hit the color coat underneath the clear coat and cause it to bubble up, that is permanent, unfixable damage. The only way you can fix that is to repaint the entire panel, which can cost anywhere from $700 to $1,000 at a reputable body shop in the Bay Area.
With Rocklear, we have had clients leave bird droppings sitting on the car for multiple weeks in the summer, and we can still wet sand away the imperfection and the damage to get rid of it.
PPF yellows under UV and reaches the end of its life somewhere around year 7 to 10, at which point it has to come off and go back on at whatever film costs by then. Ceramic coatings need reapplying every year or two. Rocklear is one application that stays.
The thick, self-leveling coat also fills light swirls and scuffs as it is applied, and the water- and dirt-repellent finish keeps grime from settling in, so it cleans up easily.
We followed up with the owner one month after installation. The paint still looked like it did the day he drove it off our lot. That custom green popping in the sunlight with zero swirl marks, zero water spots, and zero maintenance headaches.
This is what paint protection should be. Not a film that ages faster than the car does, but a permanent finish that keeps the paint the way it left the shop.
