Some cars need no introduction. People still call the E39 the greatest sport sedan BMW ever built, and this grey 2002 example wears Icon Rocklear, our permanent paint protection coating. Two decade old paint now shows real depth and a wet gloss across that long hood, and the flake in the grey reads brighter under light instead of sinking into the panel the way tired factory paint usually does.
The E39's a hard car to keep looking correct. It was the first M5 with a V8, the 4.9 litre S62, and the body's deliberately understated: slab sides, minimal creases, a shoulder line running uninterrupted from the front fender to the tail. There's no styling drama to distract you, so any dullness or unevenness in the finish is the first thing you'll notice. It's also why a coated finish reads so obviously on this shape, since the reflection's got one long clean run to make.
Icon Rocklear becomes part of the paint instead of sitting on it as a layer that wears off, and on a car this age that's the whole point of doing it. UV fade and the dulling behind it are what turn old paint chalky, the coating holds both off, it doesn't yellow, and there's no waxing and no yearly service appointment involved in keeping it there. This one came back for a maintenance wash about a month after the install, which is when we put it under the studio rig.
Twenty seven photos: wide front three quarters under the hex lights, a symmetric head on, the full driver side profile, then close work on the kidney grille, the roundel, the M5 badges, the mirror, and the quad exhaust tips. If you've got an older car of your own, this is what Icon Rocklear does for its paint.
