What PPF Actually Is, and What It Is Good At
PPF is a thermoplastic urethane film, usually around 8 mils thick, that bonds to your clear coat through an adhesive layer. It is optically clear, so it does not change how the paint looks, it just adds a sacrificial barrier on top. The film absorbs the energy of small impacts, and the better films can flex back from light marks with heat. Where that matters most is heavy, consistent rock-chip exposure: track cars, rally cars, canyon and high-mile highway driving on chip-heavy roads. Why We Stopped Offering PPF
Every PPF install we have ever removed showed some combination of three things, and none of them are fixable without pulling the film off and starting over. It yellows under sustained UV, and in a high-sun market like Northern California, hoods and roofs show it well before the warranty runs out. It seams at every panel edge, and those recessed cut lines collect dirt and lift as they age. And it carries a micro-texture that flattens the depth of metallic paint. Then there is the part the industry does not advertise: the adhesive bonds chemically to your clear coat and strengthens in the sun, until it can be stronger than the paint underneath it. We documented this on Jenn's Honda Fit, film on for 18 months, removed by the book with a steamer, and it took the top layer of paint off the fender. There is an industry test for exactly this, ASTM D4541, which measures pull-off strength. Film passes the lab. It is the real-world removal that goes wrong. And the cost math is never shown honestly: film lasts roughly 7 to 10 years before it fails visibly, right around when the warranty expires, and then it is full removal and reinstall at whatever prices are by then.
