Paint Protection

People often ask us: "Should I get PPF or ceramic coating?" The honest answer is they do different things — PPF is physical armor while ceramic coating is a chemical shield. But what if you didn't have to choose between outdated options? At Dragon Auto, we offer Icon Rocklear and PeelClear — next-generation alternatives that outperform traditional ceramic coatings and PPF. Icon Rocklear delivers superior hydrophobic protection and gloss that surpasses standard ceramic coatings, while PeelClear provides advanced film protection that exceeds what conventional PPF can offer. Visit us in Milpitas to see the difference for yourself.

What Ceramic Coating Actually Does

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your car's paint, creating a hard, hydrophobic layer on top. Water, mud, bird droppings, and road grime bead up and slide off. It dramatically reduces the effort needed to keep your car clean, adds a deep glossy finish, and protects against minor UV damage and chemical contaminants. What ceramic coating cannot do is absorb impacts. A pebble at highway speed will still chip through ceramic coating — it's not thick enough to stop physical damage. This is the key distinction. PPF, on the other hand, is thick enough (around 8 mils) to absorb impacts and self-heal scratches. It's the physical layer of protection that ceramic coating can't replace. The ideal setup is PPF underneath with ceramic coating applied on top — you get impact protection AND an effortless-to-clean hydrophobic surface.

Which One Should You Get First?

If budget forces a choice, get PPF first — specifically on the high-impact zones like the front bumper, hood, and mirrors. Rock chips cause permanent paint damage that lowers resale value and costs more to fix than the PPF would have cost. Ceramic coating is a nice-to-have on top; PPF is the must-have underneath. If you have the budget for both, Dragon Auto typically installs PPF first, allows it to cure, then applies ceramic coating over it. This gives you the maximum protection stack: PPF handles the physical abuse, ceramic coating makes the film self-cleaning and adds extra gloss. For full-vehicle ceramic-only protection (no PPF), it's a good choice for garage-kept cars with minimal highway driving — or for owners who want an easy-clean finish on a tighter budget.
